A battle is brewing in the senate.The democratic majority leader is going forward with a healthcare reform bill that includes a public option.But some moderate democrats are not yet on the public option bandwagon and republicans are solidly against the proposal and that's where the verbal battles and the arm twisting come in.Craig Boswell reports from Washington.THE SENATE HEALTHCARE REFORM BILL HAMMERED OUT LAST WEEK INCLUDES A GOVERNMENT RUN OPTION WITH A PROVISION THAT ALLOWS STATES TO OPT OUT.REID says: "It protects consumers and keeps the insurance companies honest."THE MAJORITY LEADER IS PUSHING THE NEW BILL IN SPITE OF CONCERNS FROM MODERATE DEMOCRATS WARY OF THE SO-CALLED PUBLIC OPTION.BUT SO FAR THERE ARE FEW DETAILS ON HOW STATES EXERCISE THEIR CHOICE TO DROP OUT OF THE PLAN.MCCONNELL says: "We know it will include a half trillion in medicare cuts and 400 bilion in new taxes."MEANWHILE.. THE ONLY REPUBLICAN TO SUPPORT ANY OF THE PREVIOUS PLANS HAS NOW WITHDRAWN "HER" VOTE BECAUSE OF THE GOVERNMENT RUN PORTION OF THE NEW BILL.SNOWE says: "It does give the govt a disproportionate advantage in the marketplace, they can set you know the prices, and certainly negotiate those prices at whatever level."ON THE HOUSE SIDE LAWMAKERS ARE WHITTLING DOWN THREE BILLS INTO ONE..ALL OF THEM WITH A GOVERNMENT RUN PLAN THE HOUSE SPEAKER NOW CALLS A CONSUMER OPTION.PELOSI says: "It's an option for the consumer to either purchase insurance in the private sector or buy it under the consumer option."REPUBLICANS SAY REGARDLESS OF TITLE IT WILL DRIVE UP COSTS AND RUN PRIVATE INSURERS OUT OF BUSINESS.PENCE says: "When did we opt-in on a governmentCombining the House bills could take weeks..Senate debate will also be lengthy and is expected to begin after the Congressional budget office puts a price tag on the legislation.In Washington Craig Boswell FOX News."
