House Unveils Public Option

We are getting a more clear picture of what healthcare reform may end up looking like.The house unveiled its version of the overhaul legislation today..it's an 894 billion dollar proposal that does include the public option.Now the house and senate can soon begin debating their bills as the battle for healthcare reform works its way to the white house.Craig boswell Reports.HOUSE SPEAKER NANCY PELOSI UNVEILED THE PROPOSAL THIS MORNING AFTER WEEKS OF NEGOTIATIONS AND SAYS IT WILL EVENTUALLY COVER 96 PERCENT OF AMERICANS.PELOSI says: "It reduces the deficit, meets President Obama's call to keep the cost under 900 billion dollars over 10 years. And it insures 36 million more Americans.PRESIDENT OBAMA SAYS THE HOUSE VERSION OF HEALTHCARE REFORM WILL BENEFIT SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS.OBAMA says: "What we will do is make your coverage more affordable by offering a tax credit to small businesses that are trying to do the right thing and provide coverage for their employees."THE BILL REQUIRES MOST AMERICANS TO PURCHASE INSURANCE BY 2013 FROM THEIR EMPLOYER OR THROUGH AN EXCHANGE WHERE PRIVATE INSURERS COMPETE FOR BUSINESS.ANOTHER ALTERNATIVE IS THE PUBLIC OPTION WHICH IS THE GOVERNMENT- RUN PLAN.IT WAS MODIFIED IN THIS BILL TO ATTRACT MODERATE DEMOCRATS..AND ALLOWS STATES TO NEGOTIATE RATES INSTEAD OF THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT CALLING THE SHOTS.REPUBLICANS CALL THE BILL A DISAPPOINTMENT.BOEHNER says: "This bill is pretty clear. It's going to raise the cost of American health insurance. It's going to kill jobs with tax hikes and new mandates in it."GOP LEADERS ALSO SAY THE NEARLY 2-THOUSAND PAGE PROPOSAL WILL CUT BENEFITS FOR SENIORS AND THEY WANT MORE TIME TO LOOK OVER THE PLAN.CANTOR says: "Do the American people really think that their health care will be improved because of this bill? I don't think so."BOSWELL says: (on cam tag) "The Congressional Budget Office still has to place a final price tag on the House legislation. Debate on the floor could begin as early as next week.
