Over the last three years, the Waseca school district has cut more than 2 million dollars from the budget, and twenty teachers from their staff.Depending on the results of a referendum next Tuesday, they say even bigger changes could be coming up.Fox Mankato's Ryan Gustafson has the story.The Waseca school district is asking for one thousand three hundred dollars per pupil, more than double the district's current levy of 610 dollars.And after a failed referendum last fall, the district has doubled up their effort in support of the levy.John Rokke says, "We've had a very strong volunteer movement. Close to 60 volunteers that have worked extremely hard. Our school board has put in an incredible amount of time. They've led all the consultations about the referendum process."The district received a levy from voters in 2003, but that ended being insufficient, with dropping enrollment and stagnant aid from the state.Now the district is looking at closing their elementary school, which would put all students not in the middle or high schools into their Central Intermediate School.Superintendent John Rokke says the school is in dire need of the increase, though they understand the objections of some in the community.John Rokke says, "It comes right down to the bottom line. And in our situation: a $150,000 piece of property, property taxes would go up $25 a month and that's what people always ask and that's the bottom line."The district is also looking at cutting back on bus service, which would force students that live within two miles of their school to find their own way.Fees for school activities could also skyrocket, but the district will have to convince a community that's seeing economic struggles itself.John Rokke says, "The people that do have concerns - they're very legitimate.
