Farmers Slow to Get Harvest In

Slowly but surely the crops are getting out of the fields.Moisture in the grain not in the fields is one of the biggest reasons the process has been slow.Normally crops are harvested at 19 to 20 percent moisture levels.Even though the summer was dry, this year's crops are coming out between 24 and 30 percent. That has resulted in twice the drying time, which has increased drying costs.Farmer Leon Kettner says, "I would say somewhere probably four times the amount of what we're normally, as far as gas costs and LP costs, you're using so much more."Around 75 percent of beans and 50 percent of the corn have been collected in the area.
