Area Health Care Clinics Take Books And Toys Out Of Waiting Rooms

ISJ and Mankato Clinic are working together to stop the spread of the flu viruses... which means a few changes in the waiting areas.News 12's Jennifer Hudspeth tells us what those are and the why health care professionals are saying it's a good idea.Hunter Bakeberg knows what usually keeps him occupied when he goes to see the doctor.Hunter says, "Toys and books, yeah...lots of books."But today there were none to be found.Brandon Bakeberg says, "No child's play area and no magazines and stuff like that laying around."That's because at both ISJ and Mankato Clinic all the magazines have been taken out of the waiting rooms to help slow the spread of germs.Mattias says, "People are often times covering their cough with a magazine, they go into their appointment, al of a sudden the next person sits down and doesn't know that the person ahead of them may have treated that magazine in a way that could have allowed them to pick up H1N1 or any infectious disease."And magazines aren't the only things to go... toys and play areas have already disappeared from Mankato Clinic... But, ISJ is still keeping a few playthings around.Kevin Burns says, "They are less able to carry germs, they're made specifically for patients or visitors in a healthcare setting and with our rigorous cleansing and sanitation procedures, we're comfortable that come of those toys can remain.Jennifer Hudspeth says, "While cases of the H1N1 virus have gone down over the past few weeks, health care professionals expect to see more cases of the seasonal flu in the months ahead...either way they say you can't be too careful."Burns says, "Even though there may have been a lull, or in the last couple days there may not have been as many patients, now is not the time to take our eye off the ball, we need to remain diligent, we need to remain on task and on point and these are steps we need to take now because we're thinking not only today, tomorrow and this weekend, but in the weeks and months to come."Although it is still not clear if getting rid of magazines is a temporary or more permanent measure...Little Hunter Bakeberg understands it's meant to keep him healthy...Hunter says, "I'll be better."In Mankato Jennifer Hudspeth News 12.
