With voters rejecting an operating levy for the Waseca school district, administrators are looking for ways to make ends meet.The district will need to cut two million dollars from the upcoming school year's budget.Fox Mankato's Ryan Gustafson has more.The Waseca school district has to work fast as they prepare to make some big cuts to the school's budget.Possible changes include increasing activity fees, but the district feels they will probably have to make much larger changes.John Rokke says, We think that we're going to have to adjust the type of day in 7-12 in the Junior High and High School buildings and we're going to need to make those decision early enough because the parents need to know what the future of the school is going to look like before they make their decisions.""Superintendent Rokke says it's more than likely that the district will have to shut down one of it's schools, but he expects parents to put up a fight."John Rokke says, "For example, tonight we are expecting a petition to be turned in from parents of our K-3 Hartley Elementary because that was one of the things on the budget list is a potential closing of that very fine building."Superintendent Rokke says the district intends to make their final decision on the cuts by January 15th.The school board heard from parents tonight about what they feel should be in the cuts.But with 71 percent of the district's cost being personnel related, various coaches and teachers, and the programs they are in charge of may be the most visible casualty.Rokke says, "We've had some programs eliminated, but not very many in comparison to what's going to happen this time."In Waseca, Ryan Gustafson, The Fox Mankato News At Nine.
