Mountain Lake Dealer To Be Reinstated As GM Franchise

In May of last year, General Motors announced they would end the franchises of eleven hundred dealerships throughout the country, including 30 in Minnesota. Now the U-S automaker is allowing 600 dealerships to stay under the GM umbrella. And it's a breath of fresh air for area dealerships who made the cut.Fox Mankato's Ryan Gustafson has the story. When he found out that General Motors wanted to take away his Chevrolet franchise in order to reduce costs, Brian Harder didn't know what was lacking at his dealership.Fortunately, he'll never find out.Brian Harder says, "We hired a lawyer, the group of us did, an attorney to handle it. And we got all together - then a call on Friday saying arbitration wasn't necessary and that we were approved to come back to the new GM."Of the 30 Minnesota dealers on GM's chopping block, 20 were granted reprieves, meaning they'll continue to sell new vehicles and perform warranty work on GM brands.Roger Rahn says, "It's a huge part of our operation here. Hate to lose any part, whether it was 10%, 20%, 40%. It's a great addition to the stability of our dealership and to the surrounding area.""GM's initial decision left Town's Edge with no new inventory. But the change of heart has them hoping to get new cars and trucks on the lot soon."Harder says, "Our customers have been very loyal to us. Maybe they're more loyal to us than they are to GM. And we have a very good following."With only one other dealer in the county, Higley Ford in Windom, it's easy to see why.In Mountain Lake, Ryan Gustafson, The Fox Mankato News At Nine.
