NYC Agrees To Compensate Ground Zero Workers

The thousands of firefighters, police, contractors, and other volunteers who worked at the world trade center site following the September eleventh attacks...have reached a settlement regarding their health.They'll be rewarded nearly six-hundred-sixty million dollars.It's part of a settlement with an insurer representing New York City.The money will come from a federally-funded insurance fund created six years ago.New York City internist doctor Marc Siegel says the patients suffer from lung problems as well as post traumatic stress disorder, but believes this could be just the beginning of their problems.Dr. Siegel says: "We don't know what's going to happen down the line. There's a risk of cancer here, I believe. There's a risk of emphysema.Permanent lung damage occurring down the line. Right now, we're seeing asthma."The main components of the air around the world trade center site after the attacks were asbestos, concrete, aluminum, and dust.95 percent of plaintiffs will have to approve the deal for it to kick in.
