School Board Votes To Cut 1 Million Dollars From Budget

Good evening and thanks for joining us, I'm Betsy Gessell. The Mankato Area school board votes unanimously on one million dollars in budget adjustments for the district.Fox Mankato's Ryan Gustafson explains the changes students, teachers and parents will see in the upcoming school year. The cuts will be made to keep the district's budget in line with the current freeze on K-12 funding at the state level.Tonight, Superintendent Sheri Allen explained how the district will be handling the demands, and answering any questions or concerns from the school board along the way.Sara Hansen says, "In reality the textbook purchases and the computers - those could show up again. We're saying here they are one-time, because ideally we wouldn't delay the purchases, but if we're working within a budget and we can't afford it, we could choose again."Sheri Allen says, "We want to make sure that we're not taking it out of the same areas that it's designated for our projects, because we want to make sure we're still doing what we need to do for our facilities and projects."28 separate adjustments are on the proposed list tonight, ranging in savings from two thousand dollars up to 189 thousand. Not all of the budget adjustments are cuts. Some, like an effort to get 200 thousand dollars in federal money for medical assistance, will help alleviate budget concerns in other areas.Jerry Kolander says, "This was an effort on the part of Congress to help backfill some of the special education dollars that they had committed to, but had not provided to us. And this was a mechanism to help us with those expenses."While the big cuts like the paraprofessional staff and textbook purchase reduction take up the brunt of the costs...Little things like increasing student passes from forty to fifty dollars, and adult passes from eighty to one hundred dollars for athletic events were also included. In Mankato, Ryan Gustafson, The Fox Mankato News At Nine.
